Our running tour passes by picturesque streets – Kraanlei Ghent
Ghent is a hidden gem and a must-do on any trip to Belgium. It is conveniently located, with less than one hour travel from Brussels, Bruges or Antwerp by train. Therefore, it makes an ideal trip if you are not staying locally. From the main station Gent Sint-Pieters it is either a leisurely half-hour walk to the centre or a 10 minutes tram ride to Korenmarkt – the heart of this buzzing city.
Once the largest and richest settlement in Northern Europe, Ghent’s medieval past characterizes the old town. Today, the capital of East Flanders is a university city and cultural hub and a place where something is happening all the time. Hence, you do not want to miss out!
Our running tour in Ghent is very unique and has no fixed itinerary. For that reason, you have the opportunity to create your own. Firstly, you start with a brief introduction. This is your opportunity to let your guide know where you would like to run, for instance in the city, along the river, or perhaps where the locals run. Secondly, you do a warm-up before your actual run.
The main run starts in the old town, where you get to see Ghent landmarks and must-sees such as Vrijdagmarkt, Patershol, the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen), Saint Bavo Cathedral and the Ghent Belfry, which is a recognized UNESCO World Heritage, to name a few.
Running tour in Ghent from a different angle
But Ghent is more than just its centre. It is a runner’s paradise! Based on the confluence of the rivers Lys (Leie) and Scheldt (Schelde), there are some nice riverside routes and routes that lead to popular spots, for instance, the recreational domain Blaarmeersen, nature reserve Bourgoyen and Watersportbaan, which is a local’s favourite. Last but not least, you finish with a good stretch.
This tour combines sightseeing and running and is therefore suitable for all levels. For that reason, you do not need to be an experienced runner to participate as we have regular stops for drinks and photo opportunities.
